Primary Duties and Responsibilities

The Hoag Digital team is looking for a Sr Software Developer who is motivated to combine the art of design with the art of programming. The ideal candidate will be responsible for setting technical strategy for our web platform and for the translation of the UI/UX design wireframes to actual code that will produce visual elements of our applications. Must be well versed with maintaining WordPress CMS instances (PHP) for user-facing properties. The Sr Software Developer will work with our UI/UX designers and bridge the gap between graphical design and technical implementation, taking an active role on both sides and defining how the application looks as well as how it works. Duties include but are not limited to:

  • Develop new user-facing features
  • Build reusable code and libraries for future use
  • Ensure the technical feasibility of UI/UX designs
  • Optimize application for maximum speed and scalability
  • Assure that all user input is validated before launches
  • Collaborate with other team members and stakeholders
  • Code and develop responsive web experiences
  • Maintain and improve our existing WordPress CMS instances
  • Perform other duties as assigned.


Education and Experience


  • Bachelor of Science or Masters’ in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Computer Engineering or equivalent work experience
  • Four plus (4+) years’ experience in front end web development
  • Advanced understanding of web markup, including HTML, HTML5, CSS3
  • Experience with responsive development (all screen sizes and modern browsers)
  • Strong experience with Sass, BEM and Bootstrap
  • Advanced understanding of client-side scripting and JavaScript frameworks (working with Vue.js from start to deployment, React)
  • Good understanding of building self-contained and reusable UI components
  • Advanced understanding of WordPress including site administration, theme customization, post/taxonomy customization, custom fields, actions, hooks, and plugin development (via Varying Vagrant Vagrants)
  • With understanding of WordPress, an advanced understanding of PHP and REST APIs common to the CMS’ ecosystem



  • Advanced understanding of JavaScript libraries and frameworks, such as Vue.js, AngularJS, KnockoutJS, BackboneJS, ReactJS, DurandalJS etc.
  • Good understanding of asynchronous request handling, partial page updates, and AJAX
  • Basic knowledge of image authoring tools, to be able to crop, resize, or perform small adjustments on an image. Familiarity with tools such as Gimp or Photoshop is a plus
  • Proficient understanding of cross-browser compatibility issues and ways to work around them
  • Proficient understanding of code versioning tools, such as {{Git / Mercurial / SVN}}
  • Good understanding of SEO principles and ensuring that application will adhere to them. Other Web back-end experience is a plus
