Job Description:

The Supervisor, Cancer Data Services has administrative oversight for all components of Cancer Data Services for Hoag Hospital and its affiliates (the "Organization''). Acting as a representative of the Vice President of the Cancer Center Institute the Supervisor, Cancer Data Services will be responsible for facilitating and coordinating the overall scope, cost, schedule, quality and effectives of the Cancer Data Services team including, but not limited to:

  • Effectively serves as a point of contact between cancer Data Services and COE executives, staff, and physician, acting as a resource for the COE to others.
  • Coordination and facilitation of Cancer Data Services requirements, project plans and priorities, and reporting, ensuring department expenses comply with budget and timelines.
  • Directing and coordinating the activities of the cancer Data Services team to ensure goals/objectives are met.


The Supervisor, Cancer Data Services displays and practices a work-style reflecting the mission, vision and values of the Cancer Data Services team, as well as the Organization. Participates in the continuous quality improvement process. Maintains a working knowledge of departmental standard operating procedures, including the use of specialized instrumentation, Quality Control requirements, and preventive maintenance.

Essential Functions

  • Assumes responsibility for the Cancer Data Services team operations to include supervision of personnel and budgetary activities. This includes managing the hiring, evaluation and disciplining of employees; preparing work schedules, and maintaining adequate staffing.
  • Provides supportive leadership; a feeling of complete trust, security, and satisfaction through demonstrations of competence and willing to serve.
  • Develop a stable, competent work force and encourage personal growth of all personnel through periodic evaluation and review.
  • Provide the primary point of contact between the Cancer Data Services and Organization staff.
  • Actively reviews and revises Cancer Data Services policies and procedures, making necessary updates and improvements as needs arise. This may include:
  • Ensuring all standards for the collection of cancer data are followed;
  • Conducting quality analysis on data in the registry; and
  • Conducting follow-up on all analytic cases in the Cancer Registry.


Job Requirements:

  • Active certification as Cancer Registrar (CTR) by the National Cancer Registrar's Association (NCRA), as required by the State of California Department of Health Services.
  • Minimum of five (5) years’ experience in the cancer data management field, including two years as a CTR within an acute healthcare system.
  • Minimum of three (3) years of Cancer Data Services management experience in an acute healthcare system.
  • Intermediate knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite (including Outlook, Word, Excel and PowerPoint) and registry specific software.
  • Complete and accurate knowledge of mandatory California cancer reporting requirements and American College of Surgeons requirements for cancer program approval.
  • Thorough knowledge of human anatomy and physiology, medical terminology, oncology terminology and modalities, morphology and site coding by International Classification of Diseases for Oncology.
  • Knowledge of required staging schemas (SEER Summary, SEER Extent of Diseases, American Joint Committee on Cancer, Collaborative Staging and Multiple Primary and Histology Coding Rules).
  • Ability to investigate, assemble and analyze data for making proper evaluations including the ability to make and interpret descriptive statistical computations, charts and diagrams.
  • Ability to deal tactfully and effectively with physicians, Organizational staff, and outside interest groups.
  • Possesses analytical skills required for research and managing data.
  • Excellent communication skills; customer focused; excellent attention to detail; able to prioritize tasks and meet deadlines; strong interpersonal skills; able to work in a team environment.


Job Preferences:

  • Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT) or Registered Nurse (RN).
  • Qualified bilingual or multilingual candidates.
