Job Description:

The Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMH-NP) promotes mental health through the assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of psychiatric disorders, and co-occurring conditions across the lifespan.  The PMH-NP works in close collaboration with the supervising psychiatrist, attending physicians and other multidisciplinary members of the emergency department and hospital teams in providing assessments, diagnosis, treatment and disposition assistance for patients with psychiatric needs that have been admitted into the Emergency Departments and Medical Units.


The PMH-NP is primarily responsible for assisting in the expedient treatment and disposition of patients with primary psychiatric needs and/or comorbid mental health and substance use needs, coordinating seamless care from admission through discharge.  With a focus on quality, efficiency and patient experience, the PMH-NP performs history and physical exams, orders and interprets diagnostic and laboratory tests, diagnoses and treats psychiatric and substance use conditions, and facilitates the discharge process.


In collaboration with the supervising psychiatrist, the PMH-NP functions as a knowledgeable clinician, consultant, educator and leader in psychiatric patient care management, ensuring optimal patient experience and outcomes. In this role, the PMH-NP maintains and continually improves systems for coordinating and communicating the provision of mental health care throughout the entire episode of hospitalization.

Education, Training and Experience


Required:        MSN graduate Nurse Practitioner program. Evidence of satisfactory performance and completion of proctoring and other requirements required by the Medical Staff Office. Experience in Psychiatric/Mental Health Nursing.

                        Adult Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP-BC) from American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC).


Skills or Other Qualifications


Required:        Demonstrates effective communication, interpersonal skills, organizational ability, and knowledge of proper body mechanics, safety measures and infection control, ability to follow instructions, knowledge of age of population served.

Preferred:      Keyboard skills, knowledge of data collection software.


License and Certifications


Required:        Current licensure as a Registered Nurse and Nurse Practitioner in good standing in the State of California. Board certification in area of specialty by the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners or American Nursing Credentialing Center. Current BLS and ACLS certification.  Furnishing and DEA license. Board certification is required to apply unless the candidate is a new grad and then, board certification must be achieved within 5 years of appointment to the Allied Heath Staff.
