PBX Operator I - Communications

Job Summary:


  • The PBX Operator answers a multi-incoming computerized PBX system and directs calls to the appropriate extension, department, or individual.
  • Responsible for monitoring and responding appropriately to medical emergency alarms, fire, and equipment failure.


Essential Functions:


Under moderate supervision:

  • Demonstrates knowledge and accurate use of the NEC Smart Console system.
  • Demonstrates knowledge and use of code notification systems.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of the fire, code and alarm systems monitored by PBX.
  • Demonstrates accurate use of the overhead verbal paging system.
  • Consistently provides timely and accurate information to patients, physicians, hospital personnel, and the public sector to achieve the highest possible level of satisfaction.
  • Responsible for activating the various types of Emergency Codes in the Hospital (both Disaster/Emergency and Medical Emergency.
  • Assists in transferring and connection of outgoing calls, operator-assistance toll calls, and international calls for physicians, hospital personnel, and patients.


Additional Responsibilities for all levels:

  • Position may require travel between various Hoag locations and its affiliates.
  • Position may require participating in meetings outside of normal business hours including occasional evenings and/or weekends.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.


The PBX Operator projects an image of professionalism in communication, appearance, and conduct. He/she participates in the continuous quality improvement process, as well as maintaining a working knowledge of departmental standard operating procedures. This knowledge may include the use of specialized instrumentation, Quality Control requirements, and preventive maintenance.


Clinical Care:

  • Ensure that quality patient care is delivered to all patients on a 24-hour basis, and the unit is maintained in accordance with professional and regulatory standards and the philosophy and goals of Hoag.


Education, Training, and Experience:



  • High School Diploma or equivalent.



  • Six months PBX experience in an acute hospital environment


Skills or Other Qualifications:



  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office products, including Outlook, Word, and Excel.
  • Excellent communication skills; customer-focused; excellent attention to detail; able to prioritize tasks and meet deadlines; strong interpersonal skills; able to work in a team environment.
  • Current CA driver’s license required for local travel.
