Job Summary:

 

Oncology Tumor Registrar II (Certified) In addition to the above, the Oncology Tumor Registrar II (Certified) has demonstrated expertise in registry functions and services as a resource for the design and operation of the registry. The Oncology Tumor Registrar II (Certified) is a subject matter expert with intricate knowledge of the compliance standards for the Cancer Registry, making policy and procedure changes based on the discretion of the Supervisor, Cancer Data Services. The Oncology Tumor Registrar II (Certified) works will all levels of Organization clinical and administrative staff, along with consultants, vendors, and regulatory agencies.

 

Job Specific Essential Functions:

 

Oncology Tumor Registrar I and II

 

  • Identifies all cases with a malignant diagnosis for inclusion in the tumor registry.
  • Obtains core information from the patient’s medical records, including demographic characteristics, history of cancer, diagnostic procedures, diagnosis, extent of disease and treatments.
  • Maintains a data system which will conform to the standards of the tumor registry operation and meets the needs of the users of registry data.
  • Abstracts and reviews cases with malignancies and certain benign tumors diagnosed and/or treated at the Organization for addition to the tumor registry database per local, state, federal, and other required regulatory body guidelines.
  • Participates in the quality management of the registry data and activities.
  • Compiles data and generates reports for special studies and annual reporting.
  • Provides physicians and ancillary support staff with guidelines on complete and timely documentation and Cancer Data Services standard compliance.
  • Contacts patients, providers, and state registries per the database to gather follow-up information and verify or correct patient information.

 

In addition to the above, the Oncology Tumor Registrar II will:

  • Works independently using registry resources.
  • Assist in the development and review of departmental policies and procedures.
  • Assist in the training of cancer registry staff.
  • May facilitate educational meetings, internal and external to the Organization.

 

Education Training and Experience Required:

 

  • Active certification as a Certified Tumor Registrar (CTR) by the National Cancer Registrar’s Association (NCRA), as required by the State of California Department of Health Services.
  • Minimum five (5) years experience in the cancer information management field, including two years as a CTR within an acute healthcare system.

 

Skills or Other Qualifications:

 

  • Excellent communication skills; customer focused; excellent attention to detail; able to prioritize tasks and meet deadlines; strong interpersonal skills; able to work in a team environment.
  • Basic knowledge of medical terminology and human anatomy and physiology.
  • Basic knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite (including Outlook, Word, and Excel), including keyboarding skills at 35 WPM.
  • Be working toward advancement to Tumor Registrar II.
  • Intermediate knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite (including Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint) and Health Information management-specific applications.
  • Complete and accurate knowledge of mandatory California cancer reporting requirements.
  • Thorough knowledge of human anatomy and physiology, medical terminology, oncology terminology and modalities, morphology and site coding by International Classification of Diseases for Oncology.
  • Knowledge of required staging schemas (SEER Summary, SEER Extent of Diseases, American Joint Committee on Cancer, Collaborative Staging and Multiple Primary and Histology Coding Rules).
  • Ability to investigate, assemble and analyze data for making proper evaluations including the ability to make and interpret descriptive statistical computations, charts and diagrams.
  •  Ability to deal tactfully and effectively with physicians, Organizational staff, and outside interest groups.
  •  Possesses analytical skills required for research and managing data.
