Job Description:

Oversees the Medical Physics/Dosimetry section of the Department of Radiation Oncology. Assigns staff and allots workload to meet department priorities. Develops and implements departmental standards for physics and dosimetry. Provides medical physics clinical and directional support to the department of Radiation Oncology including treatment planning, equipment calibrations, QC and QA measurements, patient dosimetry, and new procedure development. Provides medical physics clinical and directional support to the Gamma Knife and other hospital departments as necessary. Provides consultation services to the physician staff on medical physics issues. Ensures, oversees and maintains compliance with applicable state and federal radiation regulations. Consults with the department administrative director for operational and capital budgetary needs. Projects an image of professionalism in communication, appearance and conduct. Supports the Radiation Oncology and Gamma Knife Department missions. Participates in the continuous quality improvement process.


Essential Functions


Clinical Care

Ensure that quality patient care is delivered to all patients on a 24-hour basis, and the unit is maintained in accordance with professional and regulatory standards and the philosophy and goals of Hoag.


Clinical Physics

  • Provides direction for the physics staff in setting clinical priorities, policies and procedures.
  • Oversees and monitors the performance of weekly chart checks, periodic radiation equipment checks (weekly, monthly, yearly), QC/QA checks and calibrations.
  • Performs radiation safety surveys, radioactive material surveys and radioactive material inventories.  Consults with physicians on special dosimetry needs, special treatment devices, unique patient treatment plans and all medical physics issues.
  • Oversees the performance of patient radiation dosimetry measurements as requested by physicians.  Manages the reporting of malfunctioning equipment and performs minor repairs on equipment.
  • Manages the treatment planning and radiation delivery process in consultation with physicians.
  • Provides guidance and consultation for the dosimetry section.
  • Guides the treatment planning, preparation, insertion and removal of radioactive materials during brachytherapy procedures for low dose and high dose rate procedures.
  • Directs and provides medical physics support for the Gamma Knife program and IORT program.
  • Consults with industry vendors and suppliers.
  • Works in conjunction with department administration in the preparation of service contracts, equipment purchase specifications and selection.
  • Acts as the radiation oncology and medical physics liaison to other hospital departments.
  • Manages and leads I.T. integration and relationships and provides deep knowledge to ensure the connectivity of all equipment and software.



  • Prepares for and oversees radiation safety surveys and radioactive material surveys and inventories. Ensures the maintenance of current records of all regulatory compliance tested, surveys, calibrations and documentation.
  • Manages the radiation safety program of the department.
  • Provides training and instruction in radiation safety procedures.
  • Interfaces with regulatory agencies for site visits, inspections and official interactions.
  • Prepares and submits license amendments to state and federal agencies.


Time Management

  • Manages assigned projects, workload and areas of responsibility autonomously.
  • Prioritize and organize workload effectively to meet established objectives and deadlines.  Accommodates changes in workload within the department through flexibility and adaptability.


Projects/Program Development

  • Develops new treatment techniques and implements new treatment approaches and technologies.
  • Works with FD&C and department administrations to design new radiation facilities, calculates required shielding, supervises installation and acceptance testing of new equipment.
  • Provides current education programs and lectures on radiation issues, new technologies, new procedures and radiation safety issues for Hoag staff, community groups and conferences.
  • Provides technical reports, statistical and patient data as requested.



  • Provides direction to the physics and dosimetry staff.
  • Provides adequate/flexible staffing in section to handle the workload.
  • Assigns tasks and responsibilities within the physics/dosimetry section.
  • Evaluates personnel on a timely bases with appropriate documentation.
  • Coaches, counsels, and/or disciplines employees as necessary to improve performance.
  • Actively participates in the hiring of new employees.
  • Works with the department medical director, department manager and hospital administration in the development of policies and procedures, strategic planning and new technologies.

Perform other duties as assigned.


Education, Training and Experience


Required:     Ph.D. or postdoctoral in Medical Physics. 10+ years of experience.


Preferred:     Previous supervisory experience.


Skills or Other Qualifications


Required:     Demonstrated management skills. Excellent computer skills and broad knowledge of medical physics instrumentation. Ability to supervise multiple staff members. Demonstrates effective communication, interpersonal skills, organizational ability, knowledge of proper body mechanics, safety measures and infection control, ability to follow instructions.


Preferred:     Ability to develop and deliver presentations and lectures.


License and Certifications


Required: Board certified (ABR or ABMP) in Radiation Therapy Physics required.
