MAMMOGRAPHY TECH II - BREAST CARE & IMAGING CENTER

The Mammography Technologist performs screening and diagnostic mammogram examinations. Obtains images of excellent diagnostic quality while providing maximum comfort and safety to patients. The technologists will use independent judgment and the necessary skills to obtain high-quality radiographs. The technologist educates the patient/family about the procedure. Pre/post-procedure instructions are given based on the age and understanding of the patient/family. Understanding is verified. Consistently provides accurate anatomic display and provides additional views or images to optimally demonstrate anatomy and/or pathology. Technologist takes measures to provide and care for the patient’s safety and properly utilizes procedure-related patient care/support devices appropriate for the age of the patient.

 

Essential Functions

  • Performs routine screening mammography.
  • Verifies physician’s order ensures that prescription contains all required information, and questions discrepancies prior to the procedure.
  • All required documentation is complete within the established time frame.
  • Alerts Supervisor of potential problems.
  • Reports equipment malfunctions to appropriate staff.
  • Demonstrates a productivity level that is consistent with daily patient flow.
  • Can accommodate changes in workload.
  • Provides proper identification (patient name, MR#, age, DOS, ordering MD, and technologist initials) on all diagnostic films and properly inputs patient information when utilizing ultrasound units.
  • Maintain a relaxed environment, calm anxious patients, and provide a thorough explanation of the exam or procedure to the patient.
  • Performs all routine diagnostic, mammography, and some special procedures in mammography as well service recovery.
  • Assist with mammography quality control, testing, and documentation as assigned.
  • Some ultrasound scanning experience is preferred but not required.
  • Orders supplies from the hospital storeroom, monitors quantities at hand, and reports shortages to the Supervisor.
  • Offers guidance and assistance to less experienced personnel.
  • Works with the Technical Supervisor and the Office Manager to coordinate the activities of the technical, clerical, and ancillary personnel in the outpatient center.
  • Is proficient in breast ultrasound scanning and is able to perform all imaging procedures done in the Breast Center (stereotactic core biopsies, ultrasound-guided core biopsies, needle localizations, and ductograms).
  • Ensure smooth patient flow and overall department efficiency.
  • May make adjustments to patient or employee schedules as required.
  • Trains employees in proper quality assurance and procedures, positioning, quality control, and departmental protocols.
  • Serves as a knowledge resource for all staff.
  • Consistently functions as backup support for the Technical Supervisor.
  • Troubleshoots equipment issues.
  • Oversee the quality of exams being performed, provide constructive feedback, and report any areas of improvement to the Technical Supervisor.
  • Clinical Care: Ensure that quality patient care is delivered to all patients on a 24-hour basis, and the unit is maintained in accordance with professional and regulatory standards and the philosophy and goals of Hoag.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

 

 

Education, Training, and Experience

 

Required:

  • High School Diploma. Graduate of an AMA-approved Radiologic Technology program. 

Preferred:

  • Breast ultrasound scanning with ultrasound procedure experience.

 

Skills or Other Qualifications

 

Required:

  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills. Must be customer-focused with strong attention to detail. Able to prioritize tasks, meet deadlines and work in a team environment. Knowledge of proper body mechanics, safety measures, and infection control. Ability to follow instructions. Demonstrate clinical proficiency specific to the age of the population served. Proficient with Microsoft Office products and learn organization-specific systems.

 

License and Certifications

 

Required:

  • California State CRT and mammography license, American Registry of Radiologic Technologist (ARRT) with mammography license.
  • BLS Certification.

Preferred:

  • American Registry of Radiologic Technologist (ARRT) (BS) with breast ultrasound certification or ARDMS certified in breast imaging.
