Intraoperative Monitoring Technician - Intraoperative Nerve Monitor

The Intra Operative Monitoring Technologist (IOM Technologist) provides testing in the operating room as identified by the surgeon and neurologist. The IOM Technologist is able to appropriately interact and communicate with operating room staff and physicians in a professional manner. The IOM Technologist understands the complexity, regulatory requirements and policies and procedures of an operating room. The IOM Technologist with the operating room staff such that they understand the purpose and requirements of the IOM technologist.

 

The IOM Technologist competently performs the studies included in their level of service. Performance includes: patient preparation, physician integration, application of electrodes, recording of the study, documentation of testing and archiving/storage of studies. They are intimately familiar with the equipment needed for the tests they perform and are able to troubleshoot issues during the case. The IOM Technologist will assist the supervisor/manager in equipment oversight and need for intervention and prevention.

 

Essential Functions

IOM Technologist I:

  • Ability to perform LNM, FNM and EEG.
  • Communicates with surgical staff to establish correct site, type of surgery and placement of equipment in room.
  • Recognition of desired waveforms or activity as well as artifact.
  • Troubleshoots equipment malfunctions.
  • Works closely with department supervisor/manager, Medical Director and IOM Lead in daily function and operations of department.
  • Applications of neuroanatomy and normal physiological function.
  • Reports all observed patient concerns and changes in condition.
  • Ensures patient safety relative to history and contraindications for specific stimulation or monitoring techniques.
  • Recognizes significant surgical events.
  • Removes electrodes and cleans up patients post monitoring period
  • Candidate will work under direct supervision until competencies for required procedures are met. If not CNIM must be on CNIM pathway and is expected to attempt the CNIM exam when board eligible.
  • *In addition to IOM, the IOM technologist will be expected to maintain competencies in all NDT procedures.
  • *Primary job functions and responsibilities for the IOM technologist levels I – III depending on job function will be with the Neurodiagnostic Lab, including taking call if required.
  • Perform additional duties as required.

 

Education, Training and Experience

IOM Technologist I

Required:

  • Graduate from an accredited program or minimum 5 years experience performing tests in the field.
  • Ability to perform LNM, FNM and EEG.

 

Preferred:

  • CNIM Preferred

 

Skills or Other Qualifications

Required:

  • Time management, ability to work independently, advance equipment trouble shooting, ability to act quickly during emergencies, high professional standards, accountability, reliability (attendance), flexibility, ability to take ownership of errors made (e.g. if the contaminate the surgical field they speak up to let staff know so appropriate actions can be taken).
  • Higher level of performance.
  • Maintain CEU’s and credentials.

 

Preferred:

  • Memberships with professional societies e.g. ASET and WSET

 

License and Certifications

IOM Technologist I

Required:

  • BLS Certified
  • Registered (registry eligible and pass within 1 year of hire) by the American Board of EEG Technologists (ABRET)
