Histology Technician - Pathology

Status:  Per Diem
Shift:  3rd

The Histology Tech is responsible for the preparation of all surgical and autopsy specimens for microscopic examination by the Pathologist. Maintains a working knowledge of departmental standard operating procedures. This knowledge includes the use of specialized instrumentation, quality control requirements, and preventive maintenance.

Projects an image of professionalism in communication, appearance, and conduct. Supports the laboratory mission. Participates in the continuous quality improvement process. Performs other duties as assigned.


Essential Functions:

  • Performs, documents, and reviews Quality Control (QC) and maintenance per section specific policies and responds appropriately to out of range Q.C. conditions.
  • Performs job functions in accordance with departmental policies and procedures.
  • Maintains current knowledge of departmental updates and Policy & Procedures.
  • Accommodates changes in workload within the department
  • Performs procedures within established turn-around-times.
  • During light workload situations, uses the time to departmental advantage by performing additional tasks/duties for the department.
  • Maintains clean well organized, and properly stocked work areas.
  • Demonstrates flexibility in accepting schedule and work assignments.
  • Keeps manager or lead appropriately informed when problems or unusual situations arise.
  • Exercises authority when appropriate, recognizing needs and directing activities to departmental advantage.
  • Participates in efforts to improve the department through participation in QI activities.
  • Demonstrates problem-solving initiative and problem-solving skills which include appropriate actions, follow up and documentation.
  • Participates in the training of new employees, and offers guidance, assistance, and direction to less experienced personnel.
  • Adapts to changes or unusual circumstances to promote cooperation and minimize disruption to the working environment.
  • Responds in a positive manner when discussing errors and offers suggestions for error prevention.
  • Reports to the Manager or Lead in a timely manner all “near misses”, potential, and actual errors.
  • Accurately performs computer functions.
  • Assists with ordering, receipt, distribution, and storage of supplies.
  • Responds in a calm and professional manner to inquiries, complaints, and problems.
  • Clinical Care: Ensure that quality patient care is delivered to all patients on a 24-hour basis, and the unit is maintained in accordance with professional and regulatory standards and the philosophy and goals of Hoag.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.


Job Requirements:

  • High school graduate or equivalent.
  • Experience as a Histology Tech or A.S.C.P. certified.
  • Knowledge of section specific test methodology and instrumentation.
  • Knowledge of proper body mechanics, safety measures and infection control.
  • Demonstrates effective communication, interpersonal skills, and organizational ability.


Job Preferences:

  • HT (histotechnician) or HTL (histotechnologist) certification.
  • Knowledge of IHC and special staining techniques.
  • Histotechnologist.
