Job Description:

The ECMO Coordinator must possess a high degree of organizational skills and acts as the lead ECMO Specialist (ES). The ECMO Coordinator will ensure ECMO practices are concurrent with hospital operational and strategic goals, policies and guidelines. The ECMO Coordinator will work in close collaboration with Perfusion regarding initiation, management and removal of ECMO. The ECMO Coordinator will work in close collaboration with the Cardiac Physicians, Intensivists, HVI Director, CCU/CVICU Director, and CVOR Manager to ensure effective and efficiency program management.
The ECMO Coordinator will be responsible for training and orienting, developing competencies and mentoring the clinical trained and competent staff in performing ECMO at the bedside, appropriate behavior and decision-making as well as leading by example. The ECMO Coordinator provides feedback to managers on clinical staff performance with recommendations for improvement. The ECMO Coordinator will develop policies and procedures, guidelines and delegation protocols and implementation of protocols, procedures and standardized procedures. The ECMO Coordinator will provide recommendation to order set development and the electronic medical record documentation. The ECMO Coordinator will be responsible for data collection, accurate record keeping and data entry in the ELSO registry. The ECMO Coordinator demonstrates a commitment to quality and excellence promoting Hoag as an ECMO Center of Excellence. The ECMO Coordinator ensures the ECMO program is compliant with Extracorporeal Life Support Organization (ELSO) guidelines and recommendations.
The ECMO Coordinator will look for opportunities to present at medical meetings, network with other ECMO centers and attend ECMO meetings to keep appraised on ECMO management and new technology. The ECMO Coordinator will be involved in productevaluation and assessment and assist with program development and implementation of new technology.


Job Specific Essential Functions

The ECMO Coordinator ensures coordination of ECMO services in collaboration with Perfusion for patients and their family. He/she systematically and continuously collects and assesses data in collaboration with the multidisciplinary team to provide therapeutic care with the patients and their family.
Clinical Care
• Performs at a high degree of skill in providing ECMO to the patient.
• Is viewed as a resource clinician with extensive knowledge of ECMO for all phases of patient care.
• Ensures family centered care demonstrating excellent bedside manner.
• Initiate care plans utilizing best practice.
• Ensures patient care practices are compliant with hospital policy, procedures and guidelines.
• Provides accurate documentation in the electronic medical record.


• Accurately identifies and diagnoses an issue, identifies alternatives, implements a plan in collaboration with key clinical stakeholders, and evaluates and communicates results.
• Reviews patient’s electronic medical record to ensure appropriate ECMO management.
• Assess functionality of the equipment and makes recommendation for change.
• Identifies patient/family education needs and ensures that patient/family members have adequate information.


• Demonstrates ability for complex clinical decision-making including critical situations.
• Interprets selective laboratory/diagnostic tests and takes appropriate action based on results.


Care Planning
• Initiates and maintains communication and collaboration with physicians, care team leaders, staff nurses, disciplines and patients/families to develop, implement, and evaluate a plan of care for each patient.
• Active participation in the multidisciplinary rounds offering clinical expertise in ECMO management.


• Collaborates with all members of the healthcare team and external customers demonstrating a commitment to courteous, sincere and sensitive customer service.
• Assumes leadership role in the clinical setting for ECMO program management.
• Provides clinical consultation to physicians and other members of the care team.
• Responds to all requests appropriately, accurately, and in a timely manner.
• Interacts with physicians in a timely, positive manner to resolve issues.
• Seeks consultation from medical directors as required to facilitate ECMO management.
• Develop and maintain ECMO documentation in the EMR.
• Coordinates competency management for clinical staff ensuring staff meet competency requirements.


Quality Initiatives
• Works with Perfusion with guidance from the ECMO Medical Directors to define quality initiatives for the ECMO program.
• Complies with the hospital initiatives and quality improvement projects within the organization.
• Collect, enter and submit registry information to ESLO.
• Participate in formal review of ECMO cases with the medical directors.
• Participate in obtaining and maintaining Center of Excellence Award for Hoag.

Resource Utilization
• The ECMO Coordinator considers factors related to safety, effectiveness, knowledge and skill of team members, and cost in planning and delivering care.


Education, Training and Experience

• Bachelors of Science in Nursing Degree.
• Recent ECMO Specialist training from a hospital-based training program at an ECMO Center of Excellence (within 6 months of hire).
• Masters of Nursing Degree or Nurse Practitioner.
• Three (3) years’ experience as an ECMO Specialist.


Skills or Other Qualifications

• Ability to perform advanced ECMO procedures independently within the scope of their license and have good problem solving skills.

• Demonstrates effective communication, interpersonal skills and excellent verbal and written communications, and be effective in time management and organizational skills.

• Ability to work in a team environment and collaborate with a variant of professionals.

• Ability to effectively educate others and display leadership and professionalism while in the workforce.

• Extensive knowledge of ECMO related equipment and knowledge of ECMO guidelines and order sets.

• Knowledge of current disease management guidelines and ability to interpret selective laboratory and diagnostic tests.

• Collaborates with all members of the health care team and external customers.

• Computer skills related to data entry excel, clinical applications software and Word.

License and Certifications


• Current BLS, ACLS, and ECMO Certification (within 1 year of hire).
• Current license in good standing as a registered nurse in California.
• Current license in good standing as a nurse practitioner or clinical nurse specialist in California.
