Job Description:

Responsible for administrative oversight of the Pathology and Cytology cost centers. In conjunction with Medical Director of Laboratory, responsibilities include management of regulatory, personnel, financial, technical, and performance improvement aspects of Pathology and Cytology laboratory operations. Projects an image of professionalism in communication, appearance, and conduct. Supports the mission of the department and the organization. Performs other duties as assigned.

 

Technical Management:

  • Maintains current knowledge of departmental updates and Policy & Procedures.
  • During light workload situations, uses time to departmental advantage by performing additional tasks/duties for the department.
  • Maintains clean well organized, and properly stocked work areas.
  • Participates in reviewing, revising and developing policies and procedures for the department.
  • Demonstrates flexibility in accepting schedule and work assignments.
  • Keeps manager, supervisors, and leads appropriately informed when problems or unusual situations arise.
  • Exercises authority when appropriate, recognizing needs and directing activities to departmental advantage.
  • Demonstrates problem solving initiative and problem solving skills which include appropriate actions, follow up and documentation.
  • Adapts to changes or unusual circumstances to promote cooperation and minimize disruption to working environment.
  • Responds in a positive manner when discussing errors and offers suggestions for error prevention.
  • Reports to the Manager in a timely manner all “near misses”, potential, and actual errors.
  • Accurately performs computer functions.
  • Assists with ordering, receipt, distribution, and storage of supplies.
  • Responds in a calm and professional manner to inquiries, complaints, and problems.

 

Personnel Management:

  • Accommodates changes in workload within the department.
  • Disseminates pertinent information.
  • Actively participates in the hiring, orientation and training of new employees.
  • Evaluates personnel on a timely basis with appropriate documentation and input to manager.
  • Offers guidance, assistance and direction to less experienced personnel.
  • Coaches, counsels, and /or disciplines employees as necessary to improve performance.
  • Assists in monitoring Time and Attendance.
  • Accepts responsibility to act as a resource for technical questions or complaints.
  • Acts as a liaison for CPOE, SCM, Affinity, LIS and Reference Lab interfaces for lab employees.

 

Quality Management:

  • Helps identify pre-analytical QA monitors.
  • Gathers data to support the monitoring of QA parameters.
  • Actively participates and monitors competencies of phlebotomy and Lab assistant staff

 

Customer Service:

  • Identifies the needs of customers and assures that services are provided in a manner that meets those needs.
  • Educates customers about the utilization of services.
  • Resolves complaints and implements changes to avoid the repetition of problems.
  • Refers problems and complaints, when appropriate to manager.
  • Investigates incident reports, prepares documentation, and reports appropriately in Midas.
  • Interacts with physician offices as a customer service and outreach resource.
  • Performs other duties as requested.

 

Education, Training and Experience:

 

Required:

  • College graduate with a Baccalaureate degree in a major science or equivalent. 
  • Must meet and maintain currect state of California licensure requirements for an area within Pathology or Cytology.
  • Must have a minimum of 5 years experience in Pathology or Cytology. 

 

Preferred:

  • Previous management experience preferred. 
  • Masters' degree preferred 

 

Skills or Other Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of proper body mechanics, safety measures and infection control. 
  • Demonstates effective communication, interpersonal skills and organizational ability. 
  • Demonstrates strong written and verbal communication skills. 
  • Demonstrates skills in interpersonal relationships. 
  • Knowledge of proper body mechanics, safety measures and infection control. 
  • Demonstrates effective communications and interpersonal skills with all levels of staff and physcians. 

 

License and Certfications:

 

Required:

  • Must meet and maintain currect State of California licensure requirements for an area within Pathology or Cytology.

Position Reports to:

  • Hospital Administration Vice President, Indirectly by Pathology Medical Directors. 

 

Position Supervises:

  • Pathology Supervisor, Pathology Leads, Anatomic Pathology Coordinator, Pathologist Assistant, Histotechs, Cytotechs and Non-Licensed Laboratory Staff including lead positions.
