Job Description:

The Clinical Dietitian1 /Diabetes Dietitian Educator2 projects an image of professionalism in communication, appearance and conduct. Utilizing Medical Nutrition Therapy (MNT) guidelines, regulatory standards, and evidence-based medicine the clinical registered dietitian (RD)/Certified Diabetes Educator (CDE) Dietitian assesses and documents patient's nutritional needs based on pre-collected screening risk data by Nursing, Dietetic Technicians Registered (DTR's), or RD, implements care plans and counsels patients (and family members) utilizing standard protocols, reviews patient care plans of the DTR's, and may act as clinical instructor for dietetic interns. The Nutrition Care population includes: adolescents and adults, women with gestational diabetes, patients with all types of diabetes (prediabetes, type 1, type 2), overweight/obese patients, and other patients with disease-specific nutrition regimens (eg. renal disease, high cholesterol, etc). In an outpatient setting the Registered Dietitian (RD)/Diabetes Dietitian Educator (DDE), upon a referral from a physician, will perform dietary counseling, conduct nutrition and dietary assessment and develop nutritional and dietary treatment including therapeutic diets for patients with diabetes and other conditions listed above. Encounters will include 1:1 visits, telemedicine visits, as well as group classes. Supports the mission of the department and hospital. Participates in the continuous quality improvement (CQI) process by collecting data and comparing results to documented evidence-based medical/nutritional standards. Maintains a working knowledge of departmental policies and standard operating procedures. Position may require travel between various Hoag locations and its affiliates. The Diabetes Center has two primary locations: Newport Beach and Irvine.

 

Clinical Dietitian/Diabetes Dietitian Educator Ladder Levels I3 , II4 , III5 , IV6 with consistent experience, knowledge base, clinical skills, and critical thinking required for each level.

 

Essential Functions

 Within RD (and CDE, if appropriate) scope-of-practice performs screens, assessments, education and documentation utilizing Medical Nutrition Therapy (MNT) guidelines, regulatory standards, and evidence-based medicine the clinical registered dietitian (RD)/Diabetes Dietitian Educator assesses and documents patient's nutritional needs based on pre-collected screening risk data by Nursing,

 

Dietetic Technicians Registered (DTR's), or RD, implements care plans and counsels patients and family members) and may act as clinical instructor for dietetic interns. Consults with health care professionals (MDs, nurses, etc.as appropriate) to coordinate nutrition care. Answers questions patiently, effectively, and non-judgmental, as perceived by the learner. EMR documentation is according to current standards.

 Active collaboration with the interdisciplinary team and in area, unit and clinical program meetings, committees and other relevant activities.

 Acts as a community and clinical educator performing presentations on nutrition topics as requested.

 Acts as a preceptor for new hires, interns and peers according to established guidelines.

 Perform other duties as assigned.

 

Education, Training and Experience

Required:

Bachelor’s Degree with American Dietetic Association Accredited Internship Program

 

Preferred:

At least 2 years previous experience with clinical dietetics or diabetes education.

 Diabetes Center: Certified Diabetes Educator from the American Association of Diabetes Educators.

 

Skills or Other Qualifications

Required:

Demonstrates effective communication, interpersonal skills, organizational ability, knowledge of proper body mechanics, safety measures and infection control, ability to follow instructions, knowledge of section specific test information and instrumentation may be required.

 

Preferred:

Possesses teaching skills and functions well with medical hospital staff and co-workers. Ability to operate a personal computer and hospital order entry system and Computrition computer program. Proficient using Word, Excel, and Power Point desired

 

License and Certifications

Required:

Current dietitian registration through the Commission of the Dietetic Registration of the American Dietetic Association.

 

Preferred:

 Inpatient/outpatient: Advanced certifications such as: Certified Nutrition Support Clinician, Certified Diabetes Educator, etc.

 Diabetes Center: Certified Diabetes Educator through the American Diabetes Association
