Job Description:

The CI Specialist I, II, III contributes to the implementation, evaluation, optimization and maintenance of clinical technology and projects within their assigned area and in partnership with other CIs and CI leaders. The position requires the ability to develop current and future state workflows, leverage team facilitation skills delivered in a highly stressful environment, and requires the ability to develop skills in the use of clinical technology and information sciences with a customer service focus.

 

Clinical Informatics Specialist (CI Specialist I) - Licensed 
 
 
The CI Specialist I, with direction, participates in activities which support clinical effectiveness and efficiency to effectively address complex clinical-technical challenges in diverse healthcare delivery environments. CI Specialist I facilitates workflow development, initial and ongoing EHR training and competency validation to Hoag clinicians in their use of clinical technology.

 

 The CI Specialist I is expected to develop the knowledge and experience necessary to successfully pass EHR vendor certifications.

 The CI Specialist I RN with licensure in nursing brings required comprehensive understanding of clinical process and practice standards, patient flow and operational processes.

 Develops competency in clinician use of information systems; designs targeted training and remediation as necessary and evaluates effectiveness of interventions.

 Completes appropriate course work in order to provide technology training which supports the successful adoption of clinical information systems into the patient care process.

 Rounds in assigned clinical areas to help leaders identify trends that inhibit use of technology and then work with the members of the clinical team in gaining and maintaining competency in use of clinical information and communication systems.

 Provides communication regarding clinical technology changes, upgrades, and downtimes to clinical customers.

 Supports other CI leaders and Medical, Nursing and Interdisciplinary operations to facilitate workflow analysis determining the expectations and gaps.   Tests, and implements improvements to existing clinical information systems.

 Documents clinical users’ requested system improvements and communicates prioritized requests to appropriate manager so it can be presented to the governance process.

 Communicates effectively to clinical customers and is perceived as knowledgeable in teaching, supporting and empowering the customer.

 Works with assigned clinical departments in collaborative activities by acting as a key liaison and facilitating communication.

 Demonstrates effective interactions and positive interpersonal skills in dealing with others in order to maximize productivity and positive employee relations.

 Supports key informatics leaders and local subject matter experts in relevant programs and services designing efficient integration of technology into patient care processes.

 Promotes highest attainable quality in the use of clinical information systems.

 Monitors customer satisfaction with the use of clinical information systems, and develops, delivers and measures interventions. 
 Stays current with regulatory standards, management and healthcare issues and trends, and legal implications. 
 
Clinical Informatics Specialist II (CI Specialist II) - Licensed In addition to the above, the CI Specialist II:  

 Serves as a resource in promoting the understanding, integration, and application of information technology in healthcare settings.  

 Coordinates and monitors the analysis, design, implementation, evaluation, optimization and maintenance of clinical technology and projects within their assigned area and in partnership with other CIs and CI leaders.  

 Promotes the use of evidence-based clinical practice by participating in clinical informatics/technology councils, projects or other like activities

 Develops communication regarding clinical technology changes, upgrades, and downtimes to clinical customers.

 Demonstrates competency in clinician use of information systems; designs targeted training and remediation as necessary and evaluates effectiveness of interventions.

 Effectively develops and provides technology training which supports the successful adoption of clinical information systems into the patient care process.

 Supports informatics peers developing informatics competency.

 Facilitates the delivery of workflow and training knowledge consistent with and accurately reflecting standards of clinical technology use.

 Partners with Medical, Nursing and Interdisciplinary operations to facilitate workflow analysis determining the expectations and gaps.  

 Identifies, analyzes, prioritizes, redesigns, tests, and implements improvements to existing clinical information systems.

 Works with groups of diverse disciplines in collaborative activities by acting as a key liaison and facilitating communication

 Makes suggestions to IT management regarding possible technology changes that support the clinical leadership strategy, goals and clinical standards

 Participates in enterprise clinical content governance processes. 
 
Clinical Informatics Specialist III (CI Specialist III) - Licensed In addition to the above, the CI Specialist III:

 Serves as a coach to other clinical and non-clinical informatics and business analysts.  

 Participates in planning for the analysis, design, implementation, evaluation, optimization and maintenance of clinical technology and projects within their assigned area and in partnership with other CI team members and clinicians.

 Supports various IT and Operational Teams in the use of standard methodologies, processes, and services (e.g. workflow design) related to the design/development, of designated end-user clinical applications and facilitates technical support when indicated.  This resource actively works under the direction of Clinical and IT leaders to drive high quality patient care through the use of technology, while balancing ease of use and adoption of assigned clinical applications including the Hoag EHR.  

 Participates in the selection, implementation and adoption of clinical transformation to support clinical effectiveness and efficiency applying advanced education and experience to effectively address complex clinical-technical challenges in diverse healthcare delivery environments.  

 Is considered an expert in workflow development and provides consultation to clinical leaders regarding impact of change to workflow, policies and protocols, and clinician adoption.  

 Is expected to demonstrate strong facilitation skills in working with people, resources, and time to meet organizational  and departmental goals and to meet budget  

 Must demonstrate strong verbal and written communication skills and be able to speak in front 
of an audience (including the ability to effectively communicate to clinicians) and is perceived as an expert in teaching, supporting and empowering clinical users.

 Makes recommendations to their CI leader on procedures and innovation solutions to improve efficient, reliable use of the clinical information systems  Identifies, analyzes, prioritizes, redesigns, tests, and implements improvements to existing clinical information systems.

 Supports local and participates in enterprise clinical content governance processes.

 Is viewed as change agent, assisting customers with the dynamic nature of clinical information systems.

 Documents, evaluates and prioritizes clinical users’ requested system improvements and communicates prioritized requests to appropriate manager so it can be presented to the governance process.

 Reviews the content of knowledge-based tools and ensures appropriate methodologies are followed and sustained.

 Resolves complex customer issues.

 Facilitates groups of diverse disciplines in collaborative activities by acting as a key liaison and facilitating cross-function communication.

 Partners with key informatics leaders and local or enterprise subject matter experts in relevant programs and services designing efficient integration of technology into patient care processes.

 Participates in cross functional and teams across the system to optimize resources, share expertise and improve programming across multiple disciplines.

 Coaches and supports informatics peers developing informatics competency.

 Is expected to demonstrate the knowledge and experience necessary to qualify to sit for the ANCC Nursing Informatics Board Certification and is expected to demonstrate the knowledge and experience necessary to successfully pass EHR vendor certifications. 

 

Education, Training and Experience 
 
Required:
  
 
CI Specialist I - Licensed

 2-3 years clinical experience

 Clinical License (RN, Pharm.D., M.D./ D.O or Ancillary Licensure such as RT, Rehab, etc.) with proven knowledge and experience with computer applications/systems utilized in a healthcare organization.

 Previous experience with information systems which can include Council Membership

 Minimum 1 years’ experience in clinical information systems implementation and support or as a department subject matter expert including end user support. 
 
CI Specialist II - Licensed  In addition to the above,

 4-6 years clinical experience  3+ years’ experience with information systems including “at the bedside”

 Minimum 1 years’ experience in clinical information systems implementation and support or as a department subject matter expert including end user support.

 Previous Experience with EHR such as Epic including Certified Training 
 Minimum 2 years’ experience in clinical information systems implementation and support or as a department subject matter expert including end user support 
 
CI Specialist III - Licensed  In addition to the above,  

 7+  years clinical experience

 Associate Degree or higher in a Clinical Program with proven knowledge and experience with computer applications/systems utilized in a healthcare organization.  Extensive experience with information systems

 Minimum 3 years’ experience in clinical information systems implementation, support or as a department subject matter expert 
 
Preferred: 
 
CI Specialist I & II - Licensed

 Minimum 1 year experience in clinical information systems implementation, support or as a department subject matter expert

 Bachelor of Science in Nursing or other clinical discipline or Pharm.D. or other advanced preparation based on clinical specialty (such as rehab medicine), or clinical experience in CI area assigned,  

 

CI Specialist I & II - Licensed

 Master’s degree or certification in clinical informatics and or prior leadership experience preferred. 
 
Skills or Other Qualifications 
 
Required:  

 Excellent communication skills; customer focused; excellent attention to detail; able to prioritize tasks and meet deadlines; strong interpersonal skills; able to work in a team environment.  

 Understanding of clinical work flow in both inpatient and outpatient setting

 Ability to facilitate design and implement systems within the framework of technical boundaries

 Current CA driver’s license required for local travel. 
 
Preferred

 Ability to operate a variety of computer software and audio/visual equipment.  Provide programs based on adult learning principles

 Advance experience with Microsoft tools, including Word, Excel and Visio
