Job Description:

The Cardiovascular Technologist is responsible for performing hospital wide noninvasive electrocardiographic testing and for understanding and working with the current EKG Order and Management Systems.

Essential Functions:

The Cardiovascular Tech II is responsible for performing hospital wide EKGs and for understanding and working with the current EKG Order and Management systems.

• Responsible for understanding the hospital’s ADT system as it relates to the ordering EKGs

• Downloads all the EKGs to the EKG management system, pre-edits them as necessary, and assigns them to the appropriate cardiologists to confirm.

• Responsible for programming, hooking up, removing, and uploading Holter monitors, and for completing the billing component for studies he/she completes.

• Performs EKGs per department standard. Utilizes proper lead placement for 12 lead EKGs. Utilizes the EKG management system for loading EKG orders to cart. Maintains clean well organized and properly stocked work areas, including EKG machines kept in other departments. Maintains and troubleshoots equipment - EKG machines and Holter monitors.

• Programs Holter Monitors for patient. Verifies prescription and prints facesheet. Completes the billing process on all procedures performed in an accurate, timely manner and records in logbook.

• Holter Monitors: Prepares procedure/exam room and equipment for procedures and explains procedure to patient. Prepares patient hook-up of Holter monitors, uses proper lead placement, and receives monitors back. May scan Holter monitor recordings as KSAs increase.

 • Technically staffing exercise stress tests, the stress testing component of the Nuclear Medicine Cardiac stress studies, and stress echo studies.

• Responsible for all elements of Holter monitoring including Holter scanning.

• Explains stress testing procedure to patient, prepares patient for the procedure and monitors vital signs. Utilizes proper set-up and lead placement.

• Confirms correct patient and correct orders every time.

• Communicates effectively with Echocardiography tech/Nuclear Tech, N.P., and/or M.D. during procedure.

• Accurately, and in a timely manner, scans Holter recordings and places completed reports in physician reading box.

• Completes the billing process on all procedures performed in an accurate, timely manner (i.e. the day of the procedure) and records in Log book.

Clinical Care: Ensure patient care is delivered and the unit is maintained in accordance with professional regulatory standards. Demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate population as outlined in the job description and competencies

• Performs other duties as assigned


Job Requirements:

  • Graduate of a program for EKG techs or comparable experience.
  • Competent in the operation of EKG machines and EKG management systems. Knowledge of correct 12-lead EKG lead placement.
  • Understanding of EKG rhythms.
  • This knowledge may include the use of specialized instrumentation, Quality Control requirements, and preventive maintenance.
  • Ability to follow instructions.
  •  Knowledge of section specific test information and instrumentation may be required.
  • Some computer skills

Job Preferences:

  • At least one year experience performing 12 lead EKGs and hooking up Holter monitors. Experience in all the components of Cardiologic Stress Testing, both Nuclear and with Echo.
  • Ability to scan Holter monitors with an understanding of EKG rhythms.
