COUNSELOR I - CHEMICAL DEPENDENCY

Counselor I is part of the Hoag Addiction Treatment Center (HATC) team supporting the assessment, treatment planning, referral recommendations, discharge planning, education, and direct therapeutic intervention for patients and their families throughout the course of treatment. This role supports the goals of the patient’s treatment plan and assists in clinical care and case management. Coordinates care with outside providers by way of referrals when necessary. Serves as a point of contact for the patient between therapists and other members of the treatment team. Collaborates with the Medical Director, Clinical Supervisor, Supervisor of Outpatient Services, Operations Manager, and all members of the HATC multidisciplinary team. Participates in ongoing process improvement and patient satisfaction initiatives.

 

Leads and facilitates lectures for clients. Ensure the clients follow the treatment schedule. Assist with admissions and discharges, assuring all admissions and discharge documents are signed.   Provides client with an orientation about the program, rules, and a tour of the unit, including their room as assigned.

 

Accompanies clients to and from medical and other appointments or other critical needs as they arise. Redirecting and reporting clients if rules are broken. Responsible for understanding and enforcing program rules at all levels of care.

Assists in searching belongings at the time of admission as well as random room searches in the residential level of care and collect UDS as assigned. Responsible for reading the shift log at beginning of the shift and documenting all necessary information at the end of the shift. Receives and presents a change of shift reports as assigned.

Communicates with physician and supervisor of outpatient services with regards to physician orders, prescriptions, and refills as needed. Observe self-administration of medications and document in client EMR.

 

Documents daily living activities and vital information. Records patient behaviors and informs the Supervisor of Outpatient Services and Clinical Supervisor of any changes in the client’s behavior. Assists and encourages clients to participate in self-help groups, such as AA/NA, which offer clients an opportunity to support one another in recovery. Types and performs data entry as needed for communication purposes. Performs other duties as assigned.

 

Education and Experience

  • High School Graduate or equivalent required
  • Minimum one (1) years’ work experience in an alcohol/drug dependency treatment program required
  • Working knowledge of CARF and accreditation standards required
  • Knowledge of the 12-step, Smart Recovery, and other treatment models required
  • Knowledge of HIPPA required
  • Experience in addiction/behavioral health environment preferred

 

Certifications Required

  • CATC I - Certified Addiction treatment Counselor I,
  • or CADC I - Certified Addiction Treatment Counselor I,
  • or RADT  - Registered Alcohol and Drug Technician,
  • or LAADC - Licensed Advanced Alcohol Drug Counselor
  • BLS – AHA Basic Life Support required
  • Certification is required within 30 days of hire.
