Job Description:

The Perinatal Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) is an advanced practice nurse and clinical expert actively involved in clinical practice issues for the perinatal patient. The CNS has a unique advanced practice role to integrate care across the continuum and through three spheres of influence: patient, nurse, system. The primary goal of the CNS is continuous improvement of patient outcomes and nursing care. The CNS is primarily focused on improving clinical outcomes through high quality patient care; the advancement of nursing knowledge; consultative services, research, community awareness and education. The CNS serves as a positive role model, demonstrating expert professional nursing practice, strong customer service and enhanced leadership ability. The CNS works on a collegial basis with the multidisciplinary team and is an active participant in committees and councils.


Essential Functions: 

  • Assures that quality patient care is delivered in accordance with professional and regulatory standards and the philosophy and goals of the hospital.
  • Will be responsible in ensuring the provision of nursing care meets standards identified in professional literature, the standards statements of professional organizations and state and federal regulations
  • Performs indirect care activities including pre-conference planning, correspondence and other administrative duties
  • Documents assessment findings to facilitate communication and coordination of care among healthcare providers, including coordination for imaging studies, genetic counseling, or other required interventions or referrals to specialists
  • Acts as a clinical expert to mentor staff to improve clinical care, promote staff development and to be independent in identifying problems or quality of care issues and implementing solutions.
  • Assists patients with appropriate referrals to supportive services such as support groups, community resources, counselors and/or other appropriate services.
  • Recommends and sets the standard for professional nursing practice, establishes appropriate patient care measures and evaluates outcomes.  
  • Facilitate positive professional interaction between health care groups, nursing departments, management team and all affiliates.
  • Publishes data from research topics related to the specialty area of practice
  • Participates in departmental and hospital committees and meetings to facilitate improvement of patient care and development of goals, philosophies and objectives for the patient population in alliance with our organizational mission and vision
  • Performs other duties as assigned

Education, Training and Experience


Required: Completion of Advanced Practice Registered Nurse degree and 5-7 years of nursing experience beyond the degree or an equivalent combination of relevant education and/or experience.

Preferred: Experience in running a high risk program in an academic or community setting.

Required: Demonstrates effective communication, interpersonal skills, organizational ability, and takes creative initiative. Leadership skills - highly motivated, can operate independently to develop and implement a vision. Demonstrated excellence in clinical area.


Preferred: Initiates and cultivates relationships with other community resources and physician leaders.  Effective in public speaking.


License and Certifications


Required: Currently licensed to practice as a Registered Nurse and Clinical Nurse Specialist in California. Master’s degree in Nursing. Current BLS, ACLS, NRP
