As part of the Emergency Department (ED) team at Hoag Memorial Hospital, Newport Beach, you’ll give direct inpatient nursing care as per the California Nurse Practice Act, and in support of the mission of the Patient Care Services Division. Being a Hoag Clinical Nurse I means serving our community by using research and evidence-based outcomes, and collaborating with members of your team to offer the highest level of care to those who depend on us.  

 

Inside Hoag’s ED 

As a base station in the Orange County Emergency Medical Services System, Hoag’s Emergency Department provides high-quality and compassionate emergency medical care to over 70,000 patients annually; 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The ED has 56 beds with a nurse to patient ratio of 1:4, depending on the acuity of patients assigned. You’ll be collaborating with Emergency Board Certified Physicians, Emergency Care Technicians and Clinical Social Workers, just to name a few. The patient population served ranges from infant to geriatric and includes a broad scope of emergency diagnoses.  

 

As a Hoag ED nurse, your primary responsibility will be caring for patients requiring the following interventions:  

  • Cardiac and ST segment monitoring 
  • Cardioversion and defibrillation  
  • Central venous catheters and chest drainage 
  • Critical medications, intravenous therapy, and conscious sedation 
  • Ventilator management, rapid sequence intubation, and tracheostomy care 
  • 12 lead ECG, transcutaneous and transvenous pacer insertion 
  • Phlebotomy, Accu-Chek and NIH Stroke Scale  
  • Restraint management, assaultive behavior, and other medical, psychiatric and surgical diagnoses 

Other duties may include: 

  • Assessing and documenting a complete physical assessment, nursing interventions, and teaching and discharge needs for patients assigned to each shift, utilizing documentation guidelines, Standards of Care and Pathway goals. 
  • Communicating changes in the patient's condition to the Charge Nurse/Supervisor and the physician directing care, as well as pertinent information at shift report using the patient Plan of Care (POC). 
  • Administering medications and intravenous therapy with the ability to assess the appropriate indication dosing and effects of the medication administered. 
  • Assessing the educational ability/level for the patient, incorporating available educational material into patient/significant other teaching and documenting understanding in the patient record. 
  • Appropriately assesses, intervenes and cares for the adult/geriatric patient, family and significant other requiring emotional support, coping support and care for significant life changes and end of life issues. Coordinates support services with Social Services, Pastoral Care, Case Management, etc. 
  • Traveling to Hoag Hospital Irvine ED as needed.

Required 

  • Active California RN License. 
  • ACLS, BLS, NIHSS and PALS certifications. 
  • Associate Degree in Nursing. 
  • A minimum of one (1) year of recent acute hospital experience. 
  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN). If you haven't obtained a BSN upon hire, you will be asked to begin a BSN program within one year of the hire date and obtain your BSN within two years of starting the program. 

 

Preferred  

  • BSN. 
  • Certified Emergency Nurse (CEN) certification. 
  • One year or more of Emergency Room or Critical Care experience. 
  • Additional skills and knowledge of various equipment and software may be required.
