Salary Range: $50.2300 - $77.8100 /hour. Actual compensation may vary based on geographic location, work experience, skill level, and education.

 

The Clinical Nurse within the Cardiovascular Operating Room demonstrates competent knowledge, based on department policies, procedures, and standards. The Nurse may care for patients requiring the following interventions: Cardiac, Vascular, Thoracic, Interventional Radiology, and Endovascular procedures through a continuum of care including pre-procedure, intra-procedure, and post-procedure. Provides assistance to a surgeon during a surgical procedure, functions under the direct supervision of the surgeon with: positioning, prepping, draping, instrumentation, and if qualified, in knot tying, retraction, hemostats, closure of layers. 

 

Essential Functions

  • Assess patient as appropriate for the unit, reviews reports and communicates abnormal responses in a timely manner to the appropriate physician.
  • Provides a safe environment by appropriately assessing and implementing assistance as needed by the individual patient.
  • Ensures that all appropriate documentation and signatures are on the individual's chart prior to the procedure. Takes appropriate actions.
  • Ensures all appropriate equipment/supplies are available prior to the procedure.
  • Actively participate with the team to facilitate the patient/procedure flow within the unit. Assisting with leaning, stocking, and set up.
  • Assist with or direct activities of others during procedures
  • Monitoring patient response, ensuring patient safety, ensures adherence to established protocols/ standards of practice/policies/procedures.
  • Demonstrates ability to cross-train to provide care for sub-specialty of patients.
  • Maintains collaborative communication with anesthesia, surgeon, control nurse, and other departments as appropriate.
  • Maintains competency for specialized equipment and procedures related to the area.
  • Work in a collaborative team approach to provide patient care and acts as a resource for others.
  • Manages phone calls/post-procedure phone calls appropriately. Referring to the appropriate person and/or taking appropriate actions.
  • Demonstrates competent knowledge, based on Organization and policies, procedures, and standards.
  • Demonstrates an ability to organize and incorporate new routines, procedures, and skills.
  • Demonstrates skill in the use of equipment and devices pertinent to treatment, procedures, and practices.
  • Demonstrates the use of the nursing process as documented on the admission assessment, patient Plan of Care, focus charting, and discharge plan.
  • Assesses and documents a complete physical assessment, nursing interventions, teaching, and discharge needs for the patients assigned to each shift.
  • Documents in the patient record utilizing documentation guidelines, Standards of Care, and Pathway goals.
  • Communicates changes in the patient's condition to the Charge Nurse/supervisor and the physician directing the care of the patient as well as pertinent information at shift report using the patient Plan of Care.
  • Follows procedure in the identification of patients prior to implementing any procedures, interventions, etc.
  • Provides appropriate information for all patient procedures and ensures patient/significant other understanding prior to start of the procedure. 
  • Responds to emergency situations in a timeframe appropriate to the needs of the patient.
  • Administers medications and intravenous therapy with the ability to assess the indication appropriate dosing and effects of the medication administered for the patient.
  • Initiates IV therapy and documents accurate information on the patient record.
  • Correctly collects, handles, and labels specimens utilizing Standard Precautions, as well as documenting in the patient record.
  • Adheres to Infection Control policies and procedures, follows Standard Precautions and specific isolation precautions for the prevention and spread of blood-borne pathogens and other communicable diseases.
  • Appropriately assesses and implements prescribed interventions to ensure pain management for the patient.
  • Recognizes the ethical/legal/medical dilemmas existing in the nursing practice and confers with the appropriate resource personnel when making ethical nursing decisions. 
  • Implements and documents teaching discharge plans for each patient.
  • Assesses the educational ability and level of the patient population.  Incorporates available educational material into patient/significant other teaching and documents understanding in the patient record.
  • Provides ongoing assessment of the nutritional status of the patient.  Implements dietary consult when indicated to provide/maintain adequate nutritional intake.  Communicates to the physician the nutritional needs/problems of the patient.
  • Provides continuity of care through implementation/utilization of the Plan of Care for the patients.
  • Appropriately assesses, intervenes, and cares for the adult/geriatric patient, family, and significant other requiring emotional support, coping support, and care for significant life changes and end of life issues.  Coordinates support services with Social Services, Pastoral Care, Case Management, etc.
  • Clinical Care:  Ensure patient care is delivered and the unit is maintained in accordance with professional regulatory standards. Demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate population as outlined in the job description and competencies.

 

Education, Training, and Experience

 

Required:   

  • Experienced in perioperative nursing practice as a circulation nurse

 

Preferred:

  • Experienced in cardiovascular nursing perioperative practice as a scrub and circulating nurse with a minimum of 2 years of experience.

 

 

Skills or Other Qualifications

 

Required: 

  • Demonstrates effective communication, interpersonal skills, organizational ability, knowledge of proper body mechanics, safety measures and infection control, ability to follow instructions, knowledge of the age of the population served, and additional skills and knowledge of the equipment that may be required for hire into some patient care departments.
  • The ability to circulate all types of heart, vascular, thoracic, and endovascular procedures.
  • Proficient in perioperative nursing practice as a circulation nurse.

 

License and Certifications

 

Required: 

  • Current licensure or interim permit as a Registered Nurse in the State of California is required.
  • Current BLS certification is required prior to clinical rotation. 

 

Preferred: 

  • Current CNOR certification
