Shares responsibility with the Director to provide an ongoing program of spiritual care to the patients, families, and staff of Hoag Memorial Hospital Presbyterian. Serves as liaison between the hospital and patient/family’s community of faith. Provides pastoral consultation to the communities that Hoag serves on an as needed basis.


 Actively participates in the consultation and or visitation of patients at either the Hoag Newport and/or Irvine campuses

 Responsible for the ongoing management of Pastoral Consultation Services

 Supports/participates in ecumenical services of worship initiated by Pastoral Care Department

 Plans and coordinates activities to improve volunteer ministry

 Participates in hospital wide activities, i.e. annual dinners, luncheons, Pastoral Care Committee

 Provide documentation in medical record for pastoral care, palliative care, …etc.

 Available for emergency calls outside of normal business hours

 Participates in on-call duties as needed

 Assists the Manager of the CPE program with mentoring and didactic offerings

 Actively participates with Pastoral Care department staff as a full member of the team in meetings and joint activities for the benefit of the hospital

 Actively participates with hospital wide staff in interdisciplinary meetings including rounds, as well as informational activities, seminars, and offering presentations

 Perform other duties as assigned


Education, Training and Experience


Master of Divinity (MDiv.) or equivalent from an accredited theological/faith-based institution

Bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited institution

Clinical Pastoral Education, level I/II required (4 units)

Ordination by Ecclesiastical Community

Approval by local Ordinary with supporting documents, and/or

Ecclesiastical endorsement

Pastoral leadership experience with Ecclesiastical Community



Board Certification (BCC) or Board Certified eligible with one of the cognate certifying bodies


Skills or Other Qualifications


Experience working with clinical, support, and administrative hospital staff Provide periodic reports of pastoral activities on a regular schedule to pastoral staff Experience providing brief pastoral counseling and referrals


License and Certifications


Board Certified Chaplain (BCC)
