CARDIOTHORACIC SURGERY TECH III - CVOR

The Cardiovascular Surgical Tech III participates as member of the cardiac surgical team under direct supervision of an RN/Charge Nurse/Control Desk Manager/ Clinical Manager, Clinical Resource Nurse. Functions in the role of scrub/assist person and assisting physician and/or RN. Responsible for direct and indirect care of patients. Assists with maintenance, care of instruments, supplies and equipment.

 

Essential Functions

  • Identifies, gathers, and prepares instrument and equipment and specialty items for all cardiac related procedures in a timely manner according to preference card.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of anatomy and steps for routine or complex procedures.
  • Assists the team with procedure by setting up and assuring proper function of clean/sterile instruments/equipment. 
  • Practices appropriate initiation and maintenance of sponge, needle and miscellaneous item counts and equipment according to policy, including appropriate signature.
  • Acknowledges physiologic and day needs for the patients, i.e. size of equipment, maintenance of body temperature and patient safety.
  • Decontaminates, cleans, and cares for procedure / operating room equipment.
  • Assists with cleaning, and stocking of procedure / operating room and participates in expeditious room turnover.
  • Demonstrates ability to perform a variety of difficult cases/ procedures, appropriate gowning, hand washing, cleaning and instrument passing techniques.
  • Clinical Care: Ensure that quality patient care is delivered to all patients on a 24-hour basis, and the unit is maintained in accordance with professional and regulatory standards and the philosophy and goals of Hoag.
  • On Call duty.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Adheres to emergency situations in a timeframe appropriate to the needs of the patient.
  • Demonstrates clinical competence in Cardiothoracic Procedures, Robotic Cardiothoracic, Hybrid Cardiac and Endo-Thoracic procedures.
  • Works with SPD to assure accuracy and completeness of trays associated with service line.
  • Works with management, clinical resource nurse to assure necessary supplies and instruments are here for cases in service line.
  • Communicates with Cardiac Clinical Resource RN to maintain preference cards for service line. 
  • Works with management, clinical resource nurse to assure necessary supplies and instruments are here for cases in service line.
  • Assist Cardiac Clinical Resource Nurse in improving service line & quality improvement tools.
  • Demonstrates strong mentoring skills with a positive attitude.
  • Acts as preceptor/trainer to newly hired Nurses and Surgical techs. 
  • Provides feedback to the Clinical Educator in the development of education for CVOR. 
  • Serves as resource for staff in CVOR.

 

Education, Training and Experience

 

Required: Successful completion of an accredited Surgical Scrub Technician program, proof of training completion required. Minimum of 3 years cardiovascular surgery experience with Cardiothoracic Procedures, Robotic Cardiothoracic, Hybrid Cardiac and Endo-Thoracic procedures.

 

Skills or Other Qualifications/Requirements

 

Required: Demonstrates effective communication, interpersonal skills, organizational ability, knowledge of proper body mechanics, safety measures and infection control, ability to follow instructions, knowledge of age of population served, and additional skills and knowledge of equipment related to the surgical/procedural environment. On Call Duty is required at all Levels. Applicant must be willing to take call after shift and weekends. Response time is 30 minutes from notification of case to staff member entering CVOR.

 

License and Certifications

Preferred: At all levels a Surgical Technician Certification is preferred.
