Job Description:

The Clinical Research Back Office Assistant provides support for the Clinical Research Coordinators, This person relates primarily to the study coordinators with whom he/she works as a team and interacts with physicians and peers. The Clinical Research Back Office Assistant has an interest in clinical research, [2] collects, receives, processes, shipping and distributes laboratory specimens, willing to learn laboratory policies and procedures and maintains equipment and supply inventory, [3] maintains a working knowledge of departmental standard operating procedures

 

Essential Functions

 Demonstrates thorough understanding of various phlebotomy techniques. Maintains aseptic techniques when collecting specimens. Uses appropriate technique when drawing blood. Labels specimen immediately after completion of the procedure.

 Demonstrates an understanding of laboratory tests, instruments and supplies. Transports labels, records, distributes, preserves, stores or disposes specimens appropriately. Prepares solutions/reagents as needed.

 Cleans and/ or sterilizes instrument, working areas, supplies according to hospital policies. Maintains and orders supplies to keep materials on hand at all times. Checks package integrity and expiration dates for sterile supplies; Disposes contaminated material in accordance with hospital policy. Assists with care and maintenance of department equipment. Assists in maintaining laboratory records

 On notification from Study Coordinator, organizes and prepares blood specimen kits or tubes for study patient visit.

 Organizes and prepares blood specimen kits or tubes for study patient visit. Processes (spins), labels, transports and stores study samples at appropriate recommended Lab Manual temperature.

 Attend all new protocol start up orientations for trials, in particular those with multiple blood/tumor samples

 Reads and understands study Lab Manual

 Packs and ships research samples to sponsor, after counting samples and filling out appropriate forms. Keeps record in research file

 Requests pathology specimens – blocks or slides from Pathology using appropriate SOP

 Assists in obtaining tissue or treatment records from hospital, lab, or physician and obtains outside laboratory results

 Demonstrates ability to organize and prioritize duties

 Scan and file documents into the appropriate shared drive files, and regulatory binders

 Maintains accurate knowledge of equipment status. Notifies appropriate vendor for machine upkeep and service

 Promotes a positive attitude of cooperation and teamwork

 Manages work time efficiently and minimizes need for authorized overtime

 Maintains clean, well-organized and properly stocked work areas

 Accommodates changes in workload within the department

 Demonstrates flexibility in accepting schedule and work assignments

 Keeps supervisor informed when problems may interfere with work being completed on time

 Perform other duties as assigned

 

Education, Training and Experience

Required:

 High school diploma or equivalent

 Must meet and maintain current State of California Certified Phlebotomy Technician (CPT) certification.

 1 year of clinical healthcare experience or recent training through an approved CPT program

 Excellent organizational skills and ability to follow instructions

 Knowledgeable in Medical terminology.

 Proficient in Computer skills

 

Preferred:

 Knowledgeable in Medical terminology.

 Comfortable in hospital setting, interacting with research coordinators, physicians and other hospital staff as needed.

 Knowledge of clinical research federal guidelines.

 

Skills or Other Qualifications

Required:

• Knowledge and skills necessary to provide age specific care.

• Appropriate customer service and interpersonal skills

 

License and Certifications

Required:

  • A valid current Certified Phlebotomy Technician by the State of California
