The ultrasound technician performs a variety of OB ultrasound examinations and procedures using established protocols with some degree of individual judgment based on circumstances and patient conditions as ordered by the providers.


Essential Functions

• Perform ultrasonic diagnostic procedures in accordance with accepted protocols as directed by physicians.

• Instruct patients regarding procedures to ensure cooperation and optimum test results.

• Proficient in OB/GYN imaging and operating diagnostic ultrasound equipment including 3D/4D technology.

• Ability to manage a physically/emotionally demanding work environment related to changing patient needs, including working with patients with fetal anomalies that are potentially incompatible with life.

• Produce ultrasound images with all the required measurements; assist attending physicians with invasive procedures under ultrasound guidance

• Cardiac views – basic fetal surveys (at OB/Gyn office) basic heart views – 4 chamber heart and outflow tracts,

• Clean, stock and prepare room daily

• Greets and courteously escorts patient and other guests to examination room, interpret patient histories, utilizes knowledge of fetal anomalies, conditions, diagnosis, and disease processes to know what to look for during examination.

• Prepare patients for examination and performs obstetric and gynecological ultrasound exams as directed by the physicians

• Explain ultrasound procedures to patients so they feel comfortable with the experience

• Serves as liaison between patient and physician when necessary

• Documents patient information in a timely and accurate manner to ensure continuity of high quality health care.

• Calibrate, maintain ultrasound equipment

• Perform ultrasounds on 10-15 patient per day, on average

• Perform fetal surveys, and nuchal translucency scans per established standards and guidelines.

• Perform Hysterosonograms.

• Evaluate the images for their quality, but also to interpret what was captured in the image.

• Document/update information in patient’s electronic medical record.

• Notify physician of any abnormalities or concerns immediately

• Chart ultrasound results using procedure guidelines and templates

• Represents clinic in a professional manner. Treats all customers, internal and external in a courteous and cooperative manner. See patients on time and re-schedule patients as necessary

• Clinical Care: Ensure that quality patient care is delivered to all patients on a 24-hour basis, and the unit is maintained in accordance with professional and regulatory standards and the philosophy and goals of Hoag.

• Position may require local travel between various locations.

• Perform other duties as assigned.


Education, Training and Experience


High School diploma or equivalent, Minimum two years’ experience as a diagnostic medical sonographer in an OBGYN setting.

Preferred: Experience with 3D-4D scans, Knowledge of GE hardware and EHR, Viewpoint, Outlook software systems


Skills or Other Qualifications


Ability to work closely with Physicians and Staff, interacts with Fetal Diagnostic Center, Vendors, and Radiologists. Ability to maintain confidentiality


License and Certifications


American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographer certification. CPE certification,



Nuchal Translucency certified preferred
