Job Description:

The Sterile Processing Supervisor for Hoag Hospital Irvine, Newport Surgicare, and other areas assigned will be responsible for the supervision of the care, cleaning, handling, and reprocessing of instruments and equipment. Knowledgeable of instrumentation, blood and body fluid precautions, disinfection techniques, and methods of sterilization. Monitors and ensures compliance with regulatory agencies. Acts as a liaison to surgical staff to facilitate maximum efficiency of patient care.

 

Essential Functions

 Operates decontamination equipment following established Policy and Procedures and Manufacturer guidelines. Decontaminates and cleans instruments and equipment adhering to hospital policies for universal precautions.

 Inspects instruments and equipment to insure proper functioning, and notifies supervisor of unserviceable items.

 Assembles and wraps trays for sterilization following established procedures for completeness, labeling, and documentation.

 Loads and operates sterilizers according to established policies and procedures, documents the contents and processing information according to departmental policy.

 Performs quality assurance monitors and documentation for sterilization, including biological testing, chemical indicators, according to established policies and procedures.  Participates in quality improvement activities for departmental and section specific processes.

 Communicates with end user departments when sterilizing schedule is delayed, or when a delay is anticipated so that alternative measures can be implemented to support other department’s requirements for sterile instruments or supplies.

 Accurately completes inventory lists for trays and surgeon preference cards, signs, and dates.

 Responds to requests from OR rooms with urgency and by priority.

 Anticipates OR nurses needs to prevent any problems from occurring.

 Performs cleaning duties to ensure a clean and orderly environment.

 Attends and contributes to staff meetings.

 Responds to requests from other departments.

 Maintains personnel education files.

 Completes and reads shift reports at the beginning of shifts.

 Completes inventory lists for trays accurately, signs and dates.

 Maintains daily ETO/STERRAD logs and steam sterilization envelopes. Reports positive results immediately and ensures appropriate action is taken.

 Prepares equipment specific to size and age of patient

 Infant Child Adolescent Adult Geriatric

 Conducts/participates in staff meetings and posts minutes.

 

Maintains staffing schedule for assigned personnel ensuring efficient coverage of the department.

 Maintains records of instrument sterilization for regulatory agencies.

 Responds to emergency situations and takes action based on hospital protocols.

 Appropriately flexes staff to meet workload factors.

 Participates in annual evaluation of Performance Improvement. Monitors outcomes.

 Maintains staff's education and development utilizing resources available.

 Enhances the level of training and education of all positions in your area of responsibility and cultivate continuous personal and professional growth.

 Develops and implements innovative strategies to promote and foster team spirit and boost unit morale.

 Facilitates open communication with co-workers, management, and other members of health care team.

 Responds appropriately to any inquiries, complaints, or concerns and takes action without delay and/or refers request to appropriate individual.

 During light workload situations, seeks out additional tasks/duties for the department.

 Demonstrates flexibility in accepting schedule and work assignments.

 Uses initiative to resolve problems with appropriate actions on follow through, including documentation for Process Improvement.

 Participates in the training of new employees and offers guidance, assistance, and direction to less experienced personnel.

 Make sure employee performance evaluations are completed, given, and submitted by the expected time frame.

 Constructively counsels staff when indicated, utilizing the disciplinary proves including documentation.

 Supports cost containment efforts of the hospital through conservation of supplies and care of equipment.

 Writes self-evaluations and is able to recognize areas for growth and improvement. Participates with SPD Manager to plan realistic goals.

 Independently seeks opportunities to enhance skills and improve knowledge base.

 Ensures information is relayed to the appropriate personnel and/or department. Follows up whenever appropriate.

 Works at establishing a good rapport and good working relationship with departments and interdepartmental personnel.

 Reports to the unit manager in a timely manner all "near misses", potential, and actual errors.

 Acts as a preceptor for staff members and students, evaluates strengths and weaknesses, and reports to appropriate person.

 Exercises authority when appropriate, recognizing needs and directing activities to departmental advantage.

 Adapts to changes or unusual circumstances to promote cooperation and minimize disruption to working environment.

 Assists in monitoring time and attendance.

 Keeps current regarding trends in health care and changes.

 Performs job within hospital/patient safety standards (e.g. door not wedged open, equipment properly stored, etc).

 Knows and demonstrates job function in the event of an emergency (e.g. codes, fire, disaster, etc.).

 Performs job in safe manner to avoid injury to self and others, illnesses, and exposure to blood/body fluids, wears personal protective equipment and uses appropriate safety products.  Maintains a personal dress standard in keeping with hospital/department policy and wears approved name badge.

 Demonstrates knowledge of and practices the hospital and department confidentiality policies.

 Ensure that quality patient care is delivered to all patients on a 24-hour basis, and the unit is maintained in accordance with professional and regulatory standards and the philosophy and goals of Hoag.

 Perform other duties as assigned.

 

Education, Training and Experience:

 

Required:

High School Diploma or equivalent. Two years minimum experience in Sterile Processing. Knowledge of surgical terminology, instrumentation, and Case Cart pulling.

 

Skills or Other Qualifications: 

 

Required: Demonstrates interpersonal skills, organizational ability, knowledge of proper body mechanics, safety measures, infection prevention, and ability to delegate tasks. Communicates effectively using verbal, non-verbal, and written skills. Utilizes goals, objectives, and associated timetables necessary to meet the needs of a changing environment. 

 

License and Certifications

 

Required: IAHCSMM CRCST Certification.

Preferred: IAHCSMM CHL certification (Certification in Healthcare Leadership).
