Supervisor Environmental Services - Irvine Environmental Services

The Environmental Services (EVS) Supervisor and Sr. EVS Supervisor contributes to the effective operations of the Environmental Services department by supervising EVS staff and daily rounding and inspecting of patient rooms, treatment rooms, restrooms, utility rooms, nurseries, nursing stations, lounges, offices, waiting areas, and other areas as assigned in accordance with standard policies and procedures. Projects an image of professionalism in both verbal and non‐verbal communication, appearance, and conduct. Maintains a working knowledge of departmental standard operating procedures. This knowledge may include the use of specialized equipment, Quality Control requirements, regulatory standards, and preventive maintenance.    Performs other duties as assigned. 


Demonstrates outstanding customer service and “owns” successful patient/customer interactions while providing safe and high-quality cleaning standards including recognizing, comprehending, and following the meaning of designated signs, symbols, and written instructions as trained. Manages employee’s schedules, attendance calendars, annual performance reviews, and any necessary corrective action necessary if implemented coaching measures are not followed.


The Environmental Services Supervisor will maintain the operational requirements of his or her shift on a daily basis as outlined in the summary above ensuring to meet the assigned required number of audits, inspections, and rounds as outlined by leadership.


Essential Functions:


  • Act as a leader and display leadership qualities for the Environmental Services Department.  
  • Establishes and maintains appropriate professional and ethical relationships with employees, medical staff, and patients of the organization.  
  • Acts as an ambassador for the department, maintaining a good rapport with customers of the department and addressing any concerns or issues as quickly as possible. 
  • Provide support on varying shifts for staff meetings, training, and/or counseling as needed.   
  • As directed by management and/or leadership personnel, implements and tracks compliance to all new initiatives and performance improvement plans for the department and employees.  
  • Must be proficient in the English Language and illustrate the ability to communicate well both verbally and in written form.  
  • Ability to be flexible in an environment that is focused on continuous improvement. 
  • Must possess good organizational skills, able to prioritize tasks, and be proactive in anticipating customer needs.  
  • Demonstrates effective communication, interpersonal skills, organizational ability, and knowledge of proper body mechanics, safety measures and infection control. 
  • Must possess the ability to follow instructions.  
  • Screen and interview applicants to develop a stable competent workforce.
  • Continuous inspection of all assigned areas for safety and quality.
  • Understand all work schedules and schedule staffing for adequate coverage.
  • Inspect equipment and storage areas daily to maintain in clean and good working condition.
  • Provide new hire and annual training to the department.
  • Make daily contact with key personnel in all areas of responsibility to foster good communications.
  • Handle all requests in a timely manner.
  • Instill a positive attitude among EVS personnel through fairness and personal enthusiasm.
  • Provide fair, honest, timely objective evaluations for all employees.
  • If provided coaching is not followed and necessary corrective action is required, complete employee corrective actions with fairness and consistency.
  • Assume responsibility for the department in the absence of department managers.
  • Perform all other tasks and assignments as may be required.
  • Participates in reviewing, revising, and developing policies and procedures for the department.
  • Ensures compliance with quality control and performs area inspections as assigned.
  • Accurately performs computer functions; provides statistical and financial data as requested.


Possible Functions:

  • Position may require travel between various Hoag locations and its affiliates.  
  • Position may require participating in meetings or events outside of normal business hours including occasional evenings and/or weekends.  


Education, Training, and Experience:




  • Ability to read, speak, understand, write, and follow written and verbal directions in English with a basic range of comprehension sufficient for understanding job-specific forms, documents, signs, symbols, and written instructions.  
  • Basic computer skills to include the ability to utilize email program, app‐based inspection audits on a tablet, basic Microsoft office including Word, Excel, and complete computer‐based training courses without assistance.
  • Valid California Driver’s license
  • Recognizes and comprehends emergency and urgent situations and is able to react and communicate so others understand.  
  • Ability to work well with others, follow instructions, and schedule flexibility due to the needs of the hospital.
  • Must exhibit leadership skills and be able to oversee the work of constituents and effectively communicate with team members and all levels of management in the organization.
  • High School graduate or GED.
  • Previous hospital and/or hospitality Environmental Services experience.
  • Experience with the operation of a variety of cleaning equipment such as vacuums, extractors, bovac, roto.
