All MRI Technologists project an image of professionalism in communication, appearance and conduct and support the Radiology Department mission. They participate in the continuous quality improvement process while maintaining a working knowledge and following all departmental and organizational policies and procedures, including MRI Safety training and education. This knowledge may include the use of specialized instrumentation and quality control requirements, as well as specific regulatory requirements of Title 22, California Licensing & Certification of Health Facilities and Title 17, California Radiation Control Regulations. Performs other duties as assigned that do not violate laws or regulations that require personnel with special licensure.


Job Specific Essential Functions:

 MRI Tech I: The MRI technologist I is a registered professional with a minimum of 6 months - 1 year of dedicated MRI experience. Under the direction of the Technical Supervisor and Radiologist performs all MRI procedures, including Breast MRI, with minimal supervision. The technologist evaluates the scans for technical quality and makes corrections to optimize the procedures. Call responsibility as required for hospital campuses.

 MRI Tech II: Includes all of the above and has a minimum of 3 years continuous MRI experience. Displays proficiency in advanced complicated exams and participates in research protocols.

 Clinical Care: Ensure that quality patient care is delivered to all patients on a 24-hour basis, and the unit is maintained in accordance with professional and regulatory standards and the philosophy and goals of Hoag.  Perform other duties as assigned.



Education, Training and Experience


MRI Tech I/II: Completion of an ARMRIT Accredited MRI Program or Equivalent 



MRI Tech I/II: Associates Degree in Allied Health/Radiologic Sciences


Skills or Other Qualifications


MRI Tech I: Good interpersonal and communication skills. Knowledge of proper body mechanics, safety measures and infection control. Ability to follow instructions and demonstrate clinical proficiency specific to age of population served. Knowledge of cross-sectional anatomy, physiology, gross pathology, medical terminology and radiologic patient positioning. Demonstrates competency and proficiency in all MRI examinations. Must be proficient in the use of all MRI equipment, hospital information systems and radiology information systems (EMR, PACS). Must document all equipment malfunctions appropriately. Performs service recovery as appropriate.


MRI Tech II: Includes all of the above and demonstrates competency, proficiency and ability to assist in training in advanced procedures where applicable. Able to assist in the training of new personnel as required.


License and Certifications


MRI Tech I/II:

ARMRIT Certification

American Heart Association BLS Certification

American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (MR) Certification within 6 months of hire

Valid Venipuncture Certification as Required by California H&S Code



MRI Tech I/II: State of California Radiologic Technologist License (CRT)
