Lab Assistant Non Licensed - Irvine Venipuncture

The Lab Assitant receives, processes, and distributes labortory specimens for testing. Communicates testing results withour customers as well as inter and intra department as needed. The Lab Assistant is responsible for specimen verification and processing. Performs equipment maintenance, helps maintain department supplies par level, and preapres and distributes supplies for specimen collection. The lab assistant projects an image of professionalism in communication, appearance and conduct, and support the Laboratory mission. He/she maintains current knowledge of departmental updates, policies and procedures. Participates in quality improvement activites for departmental and section specific processes. Uses initiative to resolve problems with appropriate action and follow through, including documentation in the laboratory's error tracking system. Participates in the training of new employees, and offers guidance, assistance and direction to the less experienced personnel.

 

The laboratory assistant processes (including complex and multiple-step processing) and prepares specimens for Clinical Laboratory and Reference Laboratory testing. Under supervisition, the laboratory assistant ma assist with pre-analytical portions of the testing process. May assist with inventory of laboratory section supplies, and may assist with Quality Assurance data collection and recording, and action/follow-up.

 

Lab assistants specialiing in the send-outs department processes specimens following established guidelines and policies to ensure that diagnostic tests and services that are not provided by the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine are referred to Laboratories that provide high quality testing and services at a fair and reasonable cost.

 

Essential Functions

Lab Assistant I

Technical Duties:

  • Identifies patient samples by strict adherence to established procedures; labels ssamples accurately and completely.
  • Demonstrates an understanding of laboratory tests, specimen stability, instruments, and supplies.
  • Transports, labels, records, distributes, preserves, stores or dispostes specimens or contaminatd material per compliance with hospital policy.
  • Prepares solutions/reaents as needed. Assists in the preparation of specimens for testing and/or shipping.
  • Operates selected laboratory equipment under supervision. Cleand and/or sterilizes instruments and working areas according to hospital policies. Contacts appropriate service representatives when equipment requires maintenance or repiar and documents accordingly.
  • Stocking and maintaining supply par levels to ensure adequate tools necessary to perform job functions.
  • Assists with the receipt, distribution and storage of supplies. Checks package integrity and expiration dates for sterile supplies.
  • Assists in maintaing laboratory records, including but not limited to the electronic filing of laboratory documents.
  • Ensures that the daily maintenance operations of the laboratory section are documented according to established protocols. During downtime of automate monitoring insturments, manually document appropriate values and corretion action as needed.
  • Demonstrates the ability to recognize priorities first and plan for the completion of remaining duties.
  • Labels all tubes/aliquots accurately.
  • Processes speciments for automated and semi-automated laboratory instrumentation as assigned under direction supervisor of licensed CLS/MLT.
  • Performs all procedures aaccording to department policy and procedure - these may include complex or multiple-step specimen preparation and handling, testing protocols, etc.
  • Maintains on-site files of testing and other testing documents and records per CAP regulations.
  • Complies with HIPAA policy and only accesses patient information as required to perform job function.
  • Contacts physicials/care giver as required for critical red flag values and/or other request for information.
  • Follows policies for all safety precautions including appropriate PPE at all times. Actively promotes safety in the department. Notifies Supervisor of any safety issues immediately.
  • Checking expected / pending lists to maintain specimnt integrity and Hoag standards of patient care.
  • Arranges specimen pickup, including STAT, when needed.
  • Packing Lists samples as needed.
  • Cancels or modifies orders as appropriate.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

 

Quality Control:

  • Actively participates in all department quality control measures if applicable. Takes appropriate action when corrections are indicated.

 

Cooperation:

  • Develops and maintains a professional working relationship with the entire care team as well as patients and their families. Communicates with courtesty, accuracy, and reverence for confidentiality.

 

Education and Training:

  • Maintains competence.
  • Actively participates in continuing education programs.

 

Education, Training, and Experience

Lab Assistant I

Required:

  • High School graudate or equivalence.

 

Preferred:

  • Customer/Client Service Experience.

 

Skills or Other Qualifications

Required:

  • Demonstrates effective communication, interpersonal skills, organizational liability, knowledge of proper body mechanics, safety measure and infection contro, ability to follow instructions, knowledge of section specific test information and instrumentation may be required.
  • Demonstrates strong computer literacy.
  • Laboratory technical background, including college-level science courses desirable.
  • Demonstrates a high level of skill in communicating information to co-workers, nursing and medical staff, and others.
  • Must have technicial problem solving skills.
