Job Description:

The Charge Nurse of the Cardiac Cath Lab/IR department at Hoag Hospital Irvine projects an image of professionalism in communication, appearance, and conduct. Supports the mission of the Heart and Vascular Institute as well as the Hoag Institution. Participates in the continuous quality improvement process Maintains a working knowledge of departmental standard operating procedures. This knowledge may include the use of specialized instrumentation, Quality Control requirements, and preventative maintenance. Provides quality nursing care to all patients in accordance with the California Nurse Practice Act and professional regulatory standards. Utilizes the nursing process, based on evidence based outcomes, to meet patient care needs. The patient population served is the adult and geriatric patient with cardiac diagnoses. Patients cared for may also include other medical diagnoses. The primary responsibility of the Nursing staff is to provide direct patient care and to collaborate with other disciplines of the health care team to ensure the delivery of safe, timely, and appropriate patient care. Demonstrates effective communication, interpersonal skills, organizational ability, knowledge of proper body mechanics, safety measures and infection control, ability to follow instructions, knowledge of department specific test information and instrumentation. Performs other duties as assigned.

 

Essential Functions:

  • Performs duties necessary for invasive and non-invasive cardiac procedures including the following: cardiac catheterization procedures, percutaneous coronary interventions (PCI), electrophysiology (EP) studies and ablations, endovascular procedures, device placement, electrical cardioversions, trans-esophageal echocardiograms (TEE), and tilt table testing.
  • In addition, the Registered Nurse may care for patients requiring the following interventions: endotracheal intubation, ventilatory support, invasive pressure monitoring, thrombolytic therapy, electrical cardioversions, placement of transvenous pacing catheters and ventricular pacing, intra-aortic balloon pump therapy, and percutaneous cardiac assist device (PCAD) therapy
  • Participates at a technical and professional level that requires independent judgment and minimal supervision.
  • Assumes responsibility for and takes initiative in designated areas and procedures as required.
  • Participates in maintaining a safe patient care environment.
  • Demonstrates leadership skills by directing personnel and establishing collegial relationships with peers and other departments.
  • Demonstrates competence and sensitivity in caring for multicultural patients and family members by adapting the plan of care based on cultural needs identified.
  • Follows evidence based clinical standards when formulating the patient plan of care and problems list.
  • Demonstrates ability to work in a multicultural team environment and is respectful of the cultural diversity of the work force and the patients served.
  • Performs the above job functions and, in addition, provides clinical supervision of patient care and job performance of all employees on an assigned shift.
  • Plans, coordinates, and provides for optimum patient care in the department.
  • Maintains the standards of nursing care as established.
  • Assigns staff to cases appropriately, taking into account the number of staff on duty, talent mix, and acuity of patients in order to provide patient care.
  • Adjusts assignments and schedule accordingly to accommodate emergencies and add-on procedures. Add-on procedures, unless emergent, will go in the next scheduled time slot. This may allow for staff to receive breaks and/or meal period. If add-ons change staff assignments, changes will be communicated to staff.
  • Creates staffing metrics according to daily case volumes to maintain optimal productivity. This may include shift staggering and/or abbreviated shifts.
  • Evaluates the capabilities of the other professionals prior to delegating duties.
  • Facilitates and encourages staff nurse participation in shared governance councils by assuring appropriate schedule availability and provides staff nurse relief to leave unit to attend on-duty meetings.
  • Participates in the continuous quality improvement process.
  • Maintains a working knowledge of departmental and hospital standards, policies, and procedures.
  • Creates and maintains daily and call schedules for department. Any call holes and/or daily schedule imbalances are addressed in a timely fashion.
  • Encourages positive, professional behaviors within the lab.
  • Participates in data collection, audits, and reports generation as assigned.
  • Expand leadership capabilities by attending Hoag Leadership classes and committees.
  • Performs other duties as needed.

 

 

 

Job Requirements:

  • BSN
  • Active, current CA RN License
  • Current ACLS and BLS Certifications
  • Ability to commit to stand-by call within 30-minute response time and according to department needs.
  • Interventional Radiology and/or Cath Lab experience.

 

Job Preference:

  • Previous Critical Care, Emergency Department experience.
