Job Description:

The Controller will be responsible for the accounting operations of Hoag Orthopedic Institute (HOI) and its subsidiaries, to include the production of periodic financial reports, oversight of the accounting systems and recordkeeping, and management of the comprehensive set of controls and budgets designed to mitigate risk, enhance the accuracy of the organization’s reported financial results and ensure that reported results comply with generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP) and state and federal regulations. 


Position oversees accounting functions for all HOI enterprise operations.  Ensures the integrity of the financial statements which are critical to the overall organization. Provides oversight in audits of financial statements by external auditors and regulators and ensures compliance with all hospital and surgery center reporting requirements.


Essential Functions

  • Responsible for the coordination and oversight of internal and external financial reporting including management reporting, cost reporting, audits & reviews of financial statements and tax reporting as applicable for the hospital and subsidiaries, physician-invested entities, physician agreements, leases and other agreements, as applicable, and ensures appropriate accounting treatment, including consolidation, in accordance with GAAP.
  • Works closely with Hoag’s Executive leadership  in financial and budgetary matters in order to maintain financial oversight of the hospital and its subsidiaries.
  • Supports the development of operational and capital budget for the hospital and its subsidiaries. 
  • Monitors and analyzes monthly operating results against budget.  Report results of financial position to management, committees and board of entities.
  • Oversees month- and year-end close processes, including close meetings with Hoag’s Accounting and Finance teams to ensure the accuracy of each close.
  • Reviews account analyses on a monthly/quarterly basis and prepares account analyses on a monthly basis.
  • Responsible for the coordination, completion, and timely filing and submission of reports, including but not limited to tax reporting LLC filings (including estimated taxable income), OSHPD reporting, cost reporting, and business property statements.
  • Coordinates finance committee meetings/materials and leads discussions on monthly results, annual budgets and annual audit results for Board approval. 
  • Actively participates in operational committee.
  • Responsible for treasury and debt management of the hospital and subsidiaries and manages banking relationships with outside banking partners. Performs debt covenant compliance as specified in Credit agreements.
  • Develops cash modeling for the hospital and monitors balance of cash preservation and owner distributions.
  • Assist in establishing policies, procedures and programs, including technology automation to ensure effective organizational accounting practices and procedures.  Seek input from members of the organization to identify and correct inefficient processes and implements improvement initiatives.
  • Builds cross-functional relationships with Hoag departments including but not limited to Accounting, Finance, IT, Payroll, and Purchasing with regard to general ledger activity and department needs.
  • Ensures appropriate internal controls are in place and maintained for cash management, accounts payable and general ledger and ensure general ledger is set up according to OSHPD guidelines.
  • Develops and mentors staff, monitors job performance and offers feedback and assistance when needed.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.



Education, Training and Experience


Required:        Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting. 2-4 years public accounting experience.

Preferred:        1-2 years private accounting experience in a management/supervisory role in the healthcare industry

Skills or Other Qualifications


Required:        Strong technical U.S. GAAP accounting knowledge. Interpersonal skills, organizational ability, computer spreadsheet skills, word processing and familiarity with computerized financial systems, familiarity with internal control procedures.

Preferred:       Familiarity with Lawson software application. Accounting knowledge in IFRS
